Hakudei means "white clay" and Mogake refers to using seaweed on pottery to achieve a random pattern effect. The "Mogake technique" was developed in the 19th century and involved wrapping teaware with seaweed, which reacts with the clay and oxidizes during firing. The result is a unique pattern, bearing the impression of randomness, which has both aesthetic and philosophical appeal to the Japanese.
