This kyusu is particularly suited for premium quality teas due to its flat and wide shape, which allows the tea leaf plenty of space to expand. The "biri" finish is achieved by a small blade that cuts patterns into the surface during production. The teapot might have yōhen on it. Yōhen in Japanese means "changed by the flame." When the teapot is fired, the heat fluctuates in the kiln, which results in color changes on the surface. This makes every piece unique with the impression of randomness, which has both aesthetic and philosophical appeal to the Japanese.
